Hardwood Floor Installation

New hardwood should look straight, feel solid underfoot and stay that way. That comes from preparation most people never see.

Open two story living area with a wide oak hardwood floor

A floor that looks right on day one and still looks right in ten years.

Installation is where hardwood floors are won or lost. Tight seams, even lines, quiet footsteps and clean transitions all come from the way the floor is prepared, laid out and fastened.

We install hardwood in new builds, renovations and whole home upgrades, and we plan every job around the room, the subfloor and the product you chose.

How an installation unfolds

Step 1

Check the subfloor

Hardwood is only as good as what is under it. We check that the subfloor is flat, dry, clean and solid, and we deal with squeaks, high spots and low spots before any wood goes down.

Step 2

Let the wood adjust

Wood takes on and gives off moisture. Material needs time in the house before installation so it settles at the same conditions it will live in.

Step 3

Plan the layout

Direction, starting line and how the boards run from room to room are decided before the first piece is fastened. A good layout hides problems instead of highlighting them.

Step 4

Fasten it correctly

Depending on the product and the subfloor, boards are nailed or glued down. We leave the expansion gap the wood needs at walls and fixed objects, so it can move through the seasons without buckling.

Step 5

Finish the edges

Transitions, thresholds, baseboard and vents are where a floor looks either custom or careless. We cut and fit them to sit tight and clean.

Step 6

Finish the surface

Prefinished floors are cleaned and inspected. Site finished floors are sanded and coated on site. Either way, we walk the floor with you before we call it complete.

Questions we hear before every installation

How long does a hardwood installation take?

It depends on square footage, the product, the condition of the subfloor and whether the floor is finished on site. We give you a realistic schedule in your estimate, and we update you through the project platform as work moves forward.

Should I choose solid or engineered hardwood?

Both are real wood. The right choice depends on the subfloor, the moisture conditions in the space and how you want the floor to look and wear. We talk through it during material selection, and we can bring samples to your home with our mobile showroom.

Does the wood need to acclimate before installation?

In most cases, yes. Hardwood reacts to humidity, so we plan for the material to adjust to your home before it is installed. We tell you what that means for your timeline.

Which species and widths should I consider?

Oak is a common choice for its durability and range of tones, and other species suit different looks and budgets. Board width changes how a room feels, so we show you options in your own light before you decide.

Who actually does the work?

Our own crew. Bulldog Flooring does not use subcontracted labor, and the owner supervises every project.

Is the work covered by a warranty?

Yes. Our workmanship is covered by a warranty. Ask for the terms in your estimate so you know exactly what it includes.
