Staircases

A staircase is the one part of a floor people touch with their hands as well as their feet. It deserves the same care as the rest of the house, and often more.

Small details make a staircase look finished.

We install, renovate and finish hardwood stairs with attention to the parts that are seen and used every day. A staircase also has to agree with the floors around it, in tone, direction and finish.

Whether you are replacing worn treads or giving an old staircase a new look, we plan the work with you before we start, so you know what to expect at every step.

What we plan with you

Treads

The surface your foot lands on, and the part that takes the most wear. Fit, thickness and finish all matter here.

Risers

The vertical face of each step. Left natural, stained or painted, risers shape how the whole staircase reads.

Nosing

The rounded edge at the front of each tread. A clean, consistent nosing is one of the first things the eye catches.

Where stair meets floor

The top and bottom of a staircase are where it joins the floors around it. Tone, direction and transitions should look planned, not patched.

The finish

Stairs get hard use. The right finish protects the wood and keeps its color even from the first tread to the last.

New installation or renovation

Renovating existing stairs

Worn treads, an outdated stain or a finish that has given up can often be renewed without rebuilding the staircase. We sand, stain and finish so the stairs match the floors around them.

Installing new hardwood stairs

When stairs are being replaced or covered in new wood, we measure and fit each piece carefully so the staircase is solid, quiet and consistent from the first step to the last.

Staircase questions

Do you install new stair treads and risers?

Yes. We install, renovate and finish hardwood staircases. Tell us what you have today and what you want it to become, and we will explain what the job involves.

Can my existing stairs match the new floor?

That is a common request. We plan the tone and finish of the stairs together with the floor so the two read as one design.

Can stairs be refinished without replacing them?

Often they can, as long as the wood is sound. Sanding and refinishing renews worn treads, and a new stain can change the look. Severely damaged or loose parts may need repair or replacement first.

Can I keep painted risers with stained treads?

Yes. Stained treads with painted risers is a classic pairing, and you can see examples in our project photos. We will talk through what suits your home.

How long will my staircase be out of use?

Stairs can be limiting during finishing because the finish has to cure. We plan the sequence with you, so you know when the stairs can be used and when alternatives are needed.
